The project
Why Pistash
Pistash is a free web app that tracks the expiry dates of what you store — fridge, freezer, pantry, cellar, medicine cabinet — and tells you what to use first. You add a product by voice or by hand; Pistash sorts it by urgency and warns you before it's too late. Every product used in time counts towards your anti-waste score.
The name
The pika
The first is the pika, the little animal in the logo. This mountain-dwelling lagomorph spends the summer cutting grass and flowers, drying them in the sun on rocks, then stacking them under stones to get through winter. It doesn't stash at random: it turns its piles over so they dry properly, and knows exactly what it has in reserve. That's roughly what Pistash does for you.
Stash, and pistachio
The second is stash, what you tuck away for later. The third is pistachio — Pistash already sounds like a clipped version of it, which makes for a friendlier name than a spreadsheet of dates.
The pika shares one last thing with the subject at hand: it copes badly with heat, and it's one of the species climate change is putting under pressure. We won't turn that into a slogan, but it's a fitting coincidence.
Why a web app, not a store app
What that gets you
Because it works everywhere, right away. Pistash opens in a browser, on phone, tablet or computer, with nothing to install, and you can add it to your home screen to use it like any app. Everyone always has the same version, updates land instantly, and there's no store account or commission in the middle.
What it costs
That choice has a cost, and it's worth saying plainly: on iPhone and iPad, notifications only work once Pistash has been added to the home screen, and you won't find Pistash by searching the App Store or Google Play. A native version isn't ruled out, but nothing is planned at this stage.
Where the project stands
Beta, today
Pistash is in beta: the app works, your data is saved and synced, but features are still arriving and some are evolving. The free plan lets you track up to 40 products, with unlimited voice input, and has no end date. What changes is logged in the changelog.
Durations and score, documented
Default shelf lives and the score calculation are documented in the methodology: where the numbers come from, what they're worth, and what they don't measure.
Pistash is an independent project, built in France.
Tell us what you think
If a duration looks wrong to you, if a feature is missing, or if something isn't working, it's worth telling us. From your account, the Support section lets you send a message and follow the reply.
