How we calculate these numbers
The homepage sometimes shows a banner summarising the Pistash community's impact. Here's exactly how these numbers are worked out, with no embellishment.

The batch-equivalent, our unit of measurement
Every product added to Pistash forms a batch, with an initial quantity. When you mark part of that batch as consumed or discarded, Pistash records the fraction involved — for example 0.5 if you consumed half a pack of pasta. A "batch-equivalent" corresponds to one whole batch processed, whether in a single action or across several. It's the same unit used for your personal anti-waste score.
The anti-waste rate
The anti-waste rate is the ratio between batch-equivalents consumed and the total batch-equivalents processed (consumed + discarded), across the entire history of every Pistash user. A rate of 80% means that, out of 10 batches processed, 8 were consumed in time and 2 were discarded.
Why the banner doesn't always show
Below 500 total batch-equivalents processed, a global figure would be anecdotal and not very representative — it could even be discouraging rather than encouraging. The banner is therefore only shown once this minimum threshold is reached, exactly like your personal progress tier only appears after a minimum number of batches processed in the month.
The limits of these numbers
These statistics only reflect what Pistash users log in the app. They don't claim to measure a real nationwide impact on food waste, only the activity observed within Pistash. Figures are refreshed roughly once an hour.
